Wilberforce—a Sergeant on the Metropolitan Police Detective Force.
But Wilberforce was no common “Jack” (police officer). Even before working with the famous Chung Ling Soo (The Case Of The Thames Serpent), Wilberforce had “tasted the chin strap” on many tough cases –even a stint in the Army saw him used because of his detective skills.
Here, Ben R. Dilworth, gives us a sneak peek into Wilberforce’s Case Notes for 1896.
“A Jack’s lot is not a happy one” and Wilberforce was not just dealing with the ordinary criminals such as the nobblers, rampsmen, smashers, mobsmen, snoozers and skinners…. ...there were the spectres, the satanic followers, vampires and other monsters —things the ordinary copper never usually encountered and often scoffed at the stories of. Wilberforce knew better.

Are You An American Independent Comics Publisher?
I have heard from many who ventured into comic publishing that, despite all the talk of comic
stores being willing to stock Indie titles, very few were willing to. I have also hear how, at conventions where they spend a lot -a LOT- of money on tables they are pushed out of the way of the main crowds, mainstream comics and toy sellers.
Please, if you are an Indie publisher let me know the problems you have had at events as well as trying to get stores to take your books.
We all need to help each other out and highlight problems small publishers face.
Thank You

Chang3lings Comic: My 5th Big Book Of RAP
- US Letter, 8.5×11 in, 22×28 cm
no. of Pages: 20 - Publish Date: Jul 21, 2024
- £5.00

- Underground comic legend Richard Pester returns with more of his autobiographical tales in Trials of the Cosmic Oddity, Derna continues her train journey in Assumed, additionally we get two short tales from his impressive (unseen) archive.
- A "Summer Special"? Don't worry it is all explained inside and if you are my age or slightly younger you will remember UK weekly comics and their bumper specials. Trials of the Cosmic Oddity continues and we learn about his love of music and a certain Toyah. There is the growing rebellious streak and a swift interruption by two...yes, two, Cosmic Oddities!
- If you have ever watched the movie Prince of Darkness then you will get the joke in The Transmission.
- What would happen if the Terminator met Judge Dredd? And, say, a sword wielding mystery woman? Guess where you can find them?
- My only complaint about this series is that there are not enough pages!
- In today's self publishing field it is good to have personal comics that are not complaining about "the bloody Tories" or "I spent my Uni allowance now I have to ask the oldies for extra cash" or "Oh my life is hell" and so on. If you are going to produce a comic to entertain and tell a story then make it good -add a text feature like Derna Assumed (part 4 in this issue) where you will see how not to use a syringe.
- It really is fun when these books arrive and I finally have some energy to actually re-read and review!

- "Underground legend Richard Pester continues exploring decades of work never before seen."
- A simple statement but it hides a lot. Apart from the covers that are very eye catching and different there are the interiors. Trials of the Cosmic Oddity continues and in this part "Davey" is caught out drawing...comics! Know the feeling from when my own parents taunted me over writing science fiction when I was at school.
- Derna Assumed and Derna A Lost Episode are nice changes as the text stories featuring colour as well as black and white illoes (19 in total) nicely and is reminiscent of the old British comics where there were illustrated text stories. Even the old Class Comics featured these and as someone who learnt mainly to read from comics ("Gran -what does 'psychokinesis' mean?") I approve. If you just want pretty pictures (this one has those) but really don't want to strain yourself by reading...you are in the wrong place.
- The front cover as well as the back (interior and external) feature two lovely pin up pieces and, oh, right; there's also a short piece on why to never trust Fantagraphic Books or a contract from them.
- I still say that A Cosmic Oddity would make a great graphic novel and having already read it all in black and white I think it is fair to say it would make a great British rival of Harvey Pekar's American Splendor -and that is not bull-shit. I re-read the first volume twice and bored people talking about it.
- This is bound to get a big thumb's up and if you don't buy it now you are going to be rather daft looking in the future!

Continues the adaptation of Trials of the Cosmic Oddity and Derna Assumed starts in this issue.
As I have written before The Cosmic Oddity should really be picked up by one of those book publishers who like to show off that "we also do graphic novels". The U.S. had Harvey Pekar and American Splendor and for me The Cosmic Oddity stands out in a class of its own and should be considered a British classic -I am willing to die on that hill (in 40 years or so and I will by then be avoiding hill!). In fact I took out book one last night -they are on a shelf nearby- and read through it and I still get the same emotions out of it.
Believe me, even if I know someone if I think they have produced something under par or a stinker then I say so. Politely but I still say so.
Derna, now Derna is one of those characters that once seen you want to see more of. Hey, she even got her bottom pinched by The Thinker once (but he was probably tripping because no one in their right mind would try that). This is in fact an illustrated text story and it's nice to see others doing this -comic strips and text pieces.
Not mentioned on the actual online store is the other strip -Baumgarten and Weiss: Temporal Detectives and this time they deal with a certain "Doc" who killed his youthful companion to try to stop screwing up the timeline but...probably screwed up the timeline and then another "Doc". It's all lovely fun.
Would I recommend this title? Hmmm....let me see....OF COURSE!
Now support talent and buy the first and second issue of (C)RAP -number 3 is on its way!

Underground comic legend Richard Pester brings us a new magazine featuring his groundbreaking graphic novel Trials of the Cosmic Oddity, also featuring material from over three decades of art.
Just to explain (though it should be obvious) the title is a humorous play on the creator's initials -RAP- and (c) so "CRAP". Some of our non-English readers might have wondered about that!
That does not tell you much but when I received this along with issue 2 the first thing that hit me were the covers -the image here does not do it justice at all. Then I did what I always do and that is look at the production quality from paper to printing and binding (old habits die hard). It is very nicely put together and the colour reproduction is as good as you'll get with, say, Cinebook Ltd.
Having seen the original Cosmic Oddity (all three parts) I was hoping that it might get combined into one book -it would be the British equivalent to Harvey Pekar's American Splendor. What I want and what I get are two different things, however -so my mother always said. In this abbreviated form it still works and this time in colour and that I was not expecting.
There is a text piece about The Cosmic Oddity and two pages of Pester's other character Derna and tracing her history. Plus there is a homage to Saphire and Steel -possibly one of the best ever supernatural/sci fi ITV serials of the 1970-1980s.
For me this was a breath of fresh air and at £5 well worth it. I have seen the second issue and it's just as good and will review it once the ordering details are to hand.

Return of the Gods and The Green Skies The Best Ever British Graphic Novels?
"I read the original quote from that German blogger and thought it was a lot of hot air. When Return of the Gods: Twilight of the Super Heroes arrived I thought "thick book" and knew you'd taken it from 96 pages to 360+...it looked impressive. I read through it in two days and -robots, aliens, "gods", super heroes, sorcerers, alien invasions and more and world-wide. And you tell me this was done without a script?! It's the only one I can think of so, yeah, the greatest British super hero graphic novel fits as a description." Pete Clark
"You say this is your final big story? The Green Skies was fantastic and everything laid out into chapters was a great touch!"
David Stephens, Comic Reviews
" 'Holy ******* ****!' was all I could say. I even tried counting the number of characters and how the **** you produced all of this without a script beats me. Return of the Gods: Twilight of the Super Heroes and The Green Skies could only have been better if George Perez had drawn it!"
Dan's Comics
"I have no idea why you are not pushing this even harder. The books Return of the Gods: Twilight of the Super Heroes and The Green Skies I would love to see in German or at least get German fans to read since it has a good number of German heroes in it. Next big comic event over here send me copies and I'll sell them on my table!"
Gerd Hammer, German comics historian and trader
Selected comic readers were also chosen to review copies and, obviously, two of these were people from Hong Kong who I corresponded with on Manhua over the years.
"I just wish someone like Tong Li would publish this in Chinese -I mean there are Chinese heroes in this so why not?"
Wang Xiuying
"There HAS to have been a script and more than one person working on this! Brilliant!"
Mike Wayne, Australian comic dealer
Generally, these comments were all similar and I only quote these as any more would be very egotistical. The books should speak for themselves.
